HR and recruitment professionals from 17 international companies travelled to Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University (RSM) to meet talented future graduates to recruit for their organisations at the International Career Event. The successful event took place on campus on Friday 4 November 2016.

Companies and students from RSM’s bachelor, master and MBA programmes showcased themselves through corporate games, speed interviews, an international fair exhibition and networking drinks. The one-day recruitment event was organised by RSM’s Career Development Centre in co-operation with STAR Management Week.

Skilled international graduates

“We interacted with bright and eager students from various disciplines around the globe – something that resonates with the global and diverse company we are,” said Rutger de Wal, HR lead North Europe for Monsanto Nederland, which has been participating in the International Career Event for several years.

In total, 17 companies participated in the International Career Event (ICE) to attract highly skilled employees with an international background. The companies were Oracle, Avery Dennison, NN Investment Partners, Align Technology, AkzoNobel, Delta Electronics, Monsanto, Dynamic Credit, TJX Europe (TK Maxx), OTB, Zalando, BKP, Philips, Bayer, Infosys, Triodos, and Microsoft.

Finding an HR match

“It was useful to speak with several companies that are leaders in their industries, and learn about their needs and challenges not only inside the Netherlands, but also on a global scale,” said RSM MBA student Octavio Abrego.

The Mexican student said the event led to connections with three recruiters from the tech industry. “This creates new opportunities for me to find the right job after the MBA. I noticed that companies like TK Maxx and Bayer were also interested in the talent from RSM, taking several applications for their HR departments.”

AkzoNobel: recruiting talented early career professionals

In addition to ICE, there are several recruitment activities on- and off-campus, for example company presentations, says Hassan Mahmood, an RSM MBA student from Pakistan. “The ICE 2016 provided another platform where the companies and students got together at one place, trying to find the best mix for the two parties.”

Marjolein van Noppen manages the Fast Track Management Program (FTMP) at AkzoNobel, which is designed to recruit and develop highly talented early career professionals with management potential and ambition, ensuring AkzoNobel fills senior leadership positions in the future.

Target university

“RSM is one of the target universities for AkzoNobel’s management programme. This event is a unique and fantastic way to meet RSM students in a personal context,” says Van Noppen.

Alumni Himanshu Mehta, Manik Sharma and Agnes Scheltema, who are now FTMP participants, presented their experiences at AkzoNobel. “We expect to recruit another number of excellent RSM students for our next FTMP Class of 2017. Every year we recruit students from RSM successfully for our FTMP and we hope to continue doing so by further building and maintaining our relationship with RSM,” concluded Van Noppen.

Vacancies and internships

Peter Klessens from Triodos Bank was also impressed with the event. “We wanted to give students insight in Triodos Bank’s impact investing in a sustainable way. We were very happy to see that all participants of our workshop where enthusiastic to hear more about impact investing,” said the senior HR advisor. “And, we got several good leads of potential candidates for vacancies and internships,” he added.
