Open and Responsible Science Awards
The awards are an initiative of Erasmus University Rotterdam to recognise special projects and contributions within the institution in the field of open science, open education and social involvement.
CollectieveKracht wins for Societal Engagement
During this year’s Open and Responsible Science Awards, RSM’s research group Social Enterprises & Institutions for Collective Action, CollectieveKracht, accepted the ORS award for Societal Engagement.
Jury members said about the platform, “CollectieveKracht’s community-building efforts emphasised sustainability and involved various stakeholders, providing valuable access to big data.”
CollectieveKracht is an innovative knowledge-sharing platform that provides citizen collectives with reliable, science-based knowledge to help them develop into more resilient organisations, no matter their size, location or sector.
Further ORS Awards winners
Other winners include MycetOS by Wendy van de Sande of Erasmus MC and Matthew Todd of University College London, who received the prize in the category Open Research for their open-source drug discovery for mycetoma, a Neglected Tropical Disease, and their search for a cure with the MycetOS community. According to the jury, “Their work addresses neglected populations, effectively contributing to improving the lives of those overlooked by the pharmaceutical industry.”
Regarding the category of Open Education, the course From Science to Society by course coordinator Natalie Terzikhan, together with Silvan Licher, Sanne Hoepel, Ana Barbosa Mendes, Saskia Klinkenberg, Arfan Ikram and the JoinUs4Health consortium at Erasmus MC won the prize for their minor to train a future-proof generation of scientists. Their training is based on the Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) philosophy. The jury commented, “The interdisciplinary approach and collaboration with multiple universities showcased the substantial impact on society and educational innovation.”
The prizes
Each of the winners received a prize of € 2,500 for their projects that embed open scholarly practices. Awards were handed out by Dr Maarten Boksem, vice chair of the Erkennen & Waarderen programma (Recognition & Rewards programme), to underline the importance of recognising and rewarding the efforts made by the applicants. Comprised of Ana Barbosa Mendes and doctors Andreas Alfons, Savannah Boele, John Mills and Abby Onencan (chair), the jury was impressed by the quality and variety of all 31 submissions. “These awards serve as a testament to their exceptional work and contributions to their fields.”
