Recently, a group of student committees organised the voting for favourite teachers at Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University (RSM) during the annual Professor Awards – and one teacher in particular now has a record eight-year unbroken winning streak for this award. Year 1 and 2 BSc International Business Administration (IBA) and BSc Business Administration (BA) students voted in their thousands for their favourite professor, assistant professor or lecturer, demonstrating that they value the hard work of RSM academics and educational support offices. The awards were organised by the Student Representation (SR) group at RSM. On 25 May at the Erasmus Pavilion theatre, hundreds of IBA and BA students gathered to cheer for their favourite teachers and to witness the final results of the voting.

A record-breaker for making economics relatable

RSM IBA second year bachelor students voted for Florian “Flo” Madertoner, lecturer in the Department of Finance, as Professor of the Year. Florian has an unbroken record of winning this award – he has been voted the favourite teacher for Year 2 IBA students every year since 2016. “Flo cares a lot for his students, even waking up at six in the morning to give the best lecture ever,” revealed one student. Many of his students commented on Florian’s real-life and highly applicable explanations for his corporate finance course, which they find motivating.

When finance becomes an experience

Dr Arjen Mulder, RSM senior lecturer in financial management, was voted Professor of the Year by his first year BA bachelor students for his engaging and immersive teaching style. They find that Arjen creates a wonderfully informal environment for education. Says one student, “Arjen didn’t make the course feel like a task in order to complete the bachelor, but like a true learning experience.”

Bringing out the fun in marketing management

IBA first year bachelor students have only good things to say about Dr Alexander Genevsky, assistant professor department of Marketing Management. “I love his clarity, enthusiasm and incredible energy,” says one student. Alexander is known for his ability to create a connection between the students as well as an easy-to-follow lecture.

Clear explanations for challenging concepts

Dr Stephan Kramer, assistant professor at RSM’s department of Accounting and Control, was awarded Professor of the Year by his BA second year bachelor students. His students praise him for being friendly and charismatic and for giving engaging lectures. One student tells, “Stephan teaches us the materials in a simplified and understandable way.”

Best Supporting Staff award for the study advisors

Bachelor programme study advisors were given approval for their enduring support of the defending students. “They’re always there when you need help,” remarks one student. The study advisors are known for being easy to approach, reliable, kind and supportive. Quite simply, they have a passion for helping students.

High energy all round

Co-hosts Shraddha Qaundinya (IBA 2024) and Vania Cheryl (IBA 2023) were hosts for the awards ceremony, and introduced speakers Diego de Lagarde (IBA 2025), Chair of the Student Representation committee, and RSM’s dean of education Prof. Michel Lander. When the last winner had collected their award and bouquet of flowers, the Student Representation committee’s milestones were announced and its new board for 2023-2024 was introduced.
