There were 2 days, 22 companies, 86 speed interviews, and around 300 bachelor and master students at the International Career Event 2022 at Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University (RSM) on 9 and 10 November.

The two days were packed with recruitment activities. Companies connected with students from a variety of specialisations, including HR, finance, marketing, business analytics and supply chain management. The students talked to companies about recruitment processes and internship opportunities, and could have their CVs checked by the RSM Career Centre.

“The International Career Event was useful to help find an internship for next September. I could meet new companies, connect with recruiters in person and then via LinkedIn and their websites,” said Tallulah Humaira Ihsan, a student in RSM’s BSc in International Business Administration (IBA). “It’s good to start this search early. The most surprising thing about the event was how laid back the recruiters are. It was casual and not formal, which I really liked.”

Red-hot labour market

These young professionals are graduating in a red-hot labour market and have more career options to choose from, says Satya Autar, employer relations manager at the RSM Career Centre. She added that most graduates start their careers in consulting, financial services and information technology – often with a focus on sustainability.

It’s difficult for employers in many industries to find new employees. The companies taking part in the company fair were AlphaSights, Amazon, Altman Solon, QSRP, C.H. Robinson, E.ON Inhouse Consulting, Fastenal Europe, Gartner, G-STAR Raw, Goldman Sachs, Hilti Nederland BV, HPE, KnowBe4, Meltwater Deutschland, Mount Consulting, Palo Alto networks, Personio, Philips, Qualtrics, Reckitt, and Rituals.

Marketing student Yanchen (Martha) Jiang was impressed with this diversity. “It was helpful to talk to big and small companies from a mixture of industries, especially for internationals as I didn’t know all of the companies before. I liked hearing about their values, the opportunities available and to network with the recruiters.”

Talent acquisition and employer branding

Companies found that there was a good level of engagement from the students at the fair. “The RSM profile suits our vacancies. We are looking for more business students, and hiring for graduate programmes. It was great that we could reach out to students before the fair via the CV talent bank in the RSM Career Portal and we met most of them at this event so we got lots out of it,” said Johanna Tewelde, talent acquisition manager at Meltwater DACH.

Fleur van Hoeve, HR at Rituals, says the cosmetics company has vacancies in various departments and offers around 48 internships per year. “At the fair, we could create more awareness around our employer brand, as most people only know our company as a consumer. We met international students from different fields of study such as HR, finance, supply chain and marketing.”

Speed interviews

Students could also send their CVs for speed interviews for internships or jobs with AlphaSights, QSRP, E.ON Inhouse Consulting, Fastenal Europe, Gartner, Hilti Nederland BV, KnowBe4, Mainfreight, Mount Consulting, Personio, Qualtrics, and Reckitt.

“We met super-talented students during the speed interviews, they presented themselves well. We will be following up with a few rockstars, and we are already excited to participate in the next edition,” said Valentina Brkan, talent outreach specialist at KnowBe4, adding that the company is keen to hire more RSM students in the future.

“I talked to people from different companies to feel the vibe, and see which companies I would be interested to work for,” said Xinyu (Piper) Lian from RSM’s MSc Marketing Management. “The CV check was also helpful. And the most surprising thing about the event is how friendly people are. They are really open and approachable.”

MSc Employment Report

RSM graduates are in high demand in the international business world. The MSc Employment Report from last year’s graduates shows that 94 per cent of them was employed within 6 months after graduation. More than half of the graduates landed a job even before graduation. The report specifies the average starting salary per MSc programme, as well as the top employers, industries and countries of employment.

The International Career Event was organised by the RSM Career Centre and STAR Management Week, and sponsored by E.ON Inhouse Consulting.
