Prof. Tine De Moor part of successful grant application for NWO project

Tine De Moor, Professor of Social Enterprise and Institutions for Collective Action at Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University (RSM) has recently received the good news that a substantial research grant application to which she contributed was successful. She was a co-applicant in one of three projects successful in winning funds from the Dutch Research Council (NWO). The three projects will all research the current theme of NWO’s Knowledge and Innovation Covenant (KIC), which is mission-driven innovation systems in the regional context: a knowledge base for societal earning capacity. Total funding is more than € 4.2 million, to which social and private partners will contribute another € 800,000 in co-financing.

Prof. De Moor and her co-researchers will be working on a project called Boosting Social and Community-driven Entrepreneurship for the Transition to an Inclusive and Sustainable Society (SCENTISS). Utrecht University’s Prof. Niels Bosma led the application and Prof. Tine de Moor and her RSM colleagues are part of the research consortium, and will focus on the potential of multi-purpose cooperatives, in particular in energy and care.

Three substantial grants

The NWO’s KIC funding has been allocated to three projects. In addition to the award for the consortium involving Prof. De Moor and led by Prof. Niels Bosma, Utrecht University won a second award for Enabling Societal Missions through Entrepreneurial Ecosystems (ESMEE) led by Prof. Erik Stam. The Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam is the third recipient of funding, for Prof. Hans Berends’ project Fieldlabs@Scale: Towards effective collaborative experimentation for mission-driven innovation.

All three awards will see interdisciplinary consortia of knowledge institutions and private and public partners investigate how the functioning of mission-driven innovation systems can be better understood, supported and optimised.

New avenues with KIC

The Knowledge and Innovation Covenant enables the NWO to contribute to the Dutch government's mission-driven top sector and innovation policy. NWO initiates collaborations, establishes links between scientists, private and public parties, and encourages NWO to explore new avenues. The creation of new consortia brings innovative research.

In this instance, KIC’s theme aims to gather more knowledge and gain insight into how mission-driven innovation systems work, can be scaled up and accelerated. The research provides insights into the intermediate steps needed to move from innovation to societal impact and earning capacity.
