With the causes of democracy against dictatorship, racism and discrimination in sharp focus around the world right now, the annual award, De Geuzenpenning has gone to an organisation that promotes the proper functioning of the rule of law. The ceremony for the presentation of this Dutch award was organised this year by the Erasmus Initiative Dynamics of Inclusive Prosperity (DoIP),a multidisciplinary partnership between scholars from Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University (RSM),Erasmus School of Law, and the Erasmus School of Philosophy.

The DoIP worked in collaboration with the city of Vlaardingen and the Geuzenpenning Association to organise the medal ceremony in Vlaardingen City Hall on Friday 11 March, when the 2022 awardees of the Geuzenpenning, the Dutch foundation Lawyers for Lawyers (L4L), were presented. The ceremony was attended by members of DoIP, Erasmus School of Law and around 30 students from Erasmus University Rotterdam.

De Geuzenpenning award has been presented every year since 1987 to honour and support people and organisations that have committed themselves in a special way to democracy or against dictatorship, discrimination and racism. The ceremony was also attended by last year’s laureate Malgorzata Gersdorf, the first President of the Supreme court of Poland. Her medal ceremony last year was cancelled because of Covid-19 restrictions, so the official presentation was held this year instead.

RSM’s Prof. Martin de Jong is scientific director of the Erasmus Initiative Dynamics of Inclusive Prosperity (DoIP) and jointly opened the ceremony with the President of the Geuzenpenning Association Kathleen Ferrier.

Triaspolitica

Presentations during the ceremony came from the new 2022 laureate Lawyers for Lawyers as well as2021 laureate Malgorzata Gersdorf; and from Prof De Jong whose presentation was titled ‘Sketching the face of triaspolitica for the 21st century’. Triaspolitica refers to the power theory for the organisation of the state in such a way that the legislative branch, the executive branch and the judiciaryare separated from each other and monitor each other's functioning.

The DoIP initiative at Erasmus Universityfocuses on enabling as many people as possible to benefit from increasing prosperity, whilst minimising the negative consequences. Increased prosperity requires constant coordination of the changing needs and values of governments, businesses, citizens and entrepreneurs.

Dr Michal Stambulski of the Erasmus School of Lawmade his presentation, ‘Rule of law, democracy and populism’, and Associate Professor Federica Violiof the Erasmus School of Law presented ‘The promise and instrumentality of the human rights project’.

Lawyers for Lawyers (L4L) is an independent and non-political organisation that promotes the proper functioning of the rules of law by supporting lawyers around the world who experience difficulties and are at risk because of their work.
