The idea of making community volunteer service mandatory for all secondary school students has been one of the most roundly supported recent proposals of the current Dutch cabinet. Beginning 2011 all secondary school students in Holland will be required to perform at least 72 hours of volunteer community service. Some fear that there won't be enough volunteer work available for all of these students. However Lucas Meijs states that the influx of volunteer students will actually have relatively little impact on the increase to the entire Dutch volunteer work force, and similarly small impact on the increase to the total number of volunteer hours worked in the Netherlands. He further states that all students should be able to fulfill their community service requirement with some creativity on the part of organisations placing these students in volunteer roles.
