Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University (RSM) took first place in the 2024 Learning Design Awards at the annual Future of Management Education Alliance (FOME) conference 9-11 December RSM in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. Vlerick Business School (Belgium) and EDHEC Business School (France) placed second and third, respectively. Eight business schools competed in the third annual awards, which celebrate excellence in management learning in the digital age.

RSM business consultant, Luuk Pessers presented the Harmonized Appraisal Assessment (HAPP) on the last day of FOME’s annual conference. HAPP uses a digital assessment methodology to improve student feedback and save professors time in grading. In field studies, students said they appreciated the feedback from professors utilising the web application and felt that the grading was accurate and fair. Students were also less likely to complain about a grade when professors used HAPP.

“My team members and I are delighted to win this year’s competition,” said Dr Colin Lee, HAPP team lead and assistant professor in the department of Organisation and Personnel Management at RSM. “We believe HAPP has the power to revolutionise the evaluation process. By integrating the grading and feedback processes into one, HAPP simplifies the assessment process for professors and enhances the learning experience for students.”

Team members from Vlerick Business School and EDHEC were also present to discuss their learning innovations. Vlerick Business School created personalised learning logs for participants in its online Take The Lead in Sustainability Management programme and used Gen AI to accommodate participants who prefer audio over text (click here for more information). EDHEC designed an assessment strategy called IMPACT-ED that reduces exam stress and prevents students from overly relying on ChatGPT during evaluations.

The top three winners received digital badges and cash prizes. ESMT Berlin and Imperial College Business School were semi-finalists in the competition.

“The Learning Design Awards celebrate not just innovation but also the dedication, creativity and passion of those shaping the future of business education,” said Steve Muylle, FOME Alliance chair and professor at Vlerick Business School. “It’s inspiring to see the innovations emerging from the FOME community. By collaborating and leveraging our collective strengths, we can deliver market-driven, cutting-edge learning solutions for global leaders.”
