Students of finance and investments achieved two goals when they organised their study trip to Frankfurt last month. The master students from the MSc Finance and Investments Advanced programme (MScFI-A) at Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University (RSM) hoped to find out more about the transition from institutions-based to market-based finance in Europe. But they also spent valuable networking time with people working in the industry, and explored potential career paths during their series of visits, lectures and presentations.

In total, 37 students from the first cohort of the MScFI-A spent four days in Frankfurt in January. They attended lectures at Goethe University, visited banks, professional services, financial consultancies, financing and investment companies, international manufacturing corporations, and the European Central Bank. Organisations visited included ING DiBa, PwC, NIBC, ZEB, Deutsche Börse and Harris Williams & Co., from which the students found out more about career perspectives.

By the end of their trip, students had gathered a broad set of opinions on finance in Europe from their hosts, but they had also discovered more about career paths in the world of finance and investments, which could be useful as they take the next steps in their careers when they graduate from their highly selective 16-month programme in 2018.

Keep in touch

“The companies and institutions in Frankfurt made the most of the opportunity to meet our high-potential candidates,” commented Vildana Gačić, Career Development Manager for the MScFI-A. “Judging by the effort that these organisations put into their presentations, they really valued RSM’s study trip initiative. They willingly shared their expectations and made it easy for students to keep in touch.”

Students also valued the opportunity to see the finance and investments industry in action in Frankfurt. Student Azra Pala said: "It was interesting to experience how academics and practitioners talk about and use the same concepts in totally different ways.”

Linda Rosenbrand said: "The study trip offered me the opportunity to gain new insights on research questions discussed in class by assessing them in company cases".

A source of motivation

The study trip was also a source of motivation for some. Concha Zimmer said: “The study trip is a great addition to the theoretical knowledge we gained in our masters. It is very motivating to see where we can go after our studies.”

Deadline for applications

New students embarking on the next iteration of the MScFI-A in September 2017 can expect the same combination of core courses and living management cases with leading financials and corporates. Career development coaching will start early in the academic year to help students to achieve the best career-boosting internships and job applications. Applications for the September 2017 intake of the MSc Finance and Investments Advanced close on 31 March 2017. www.rsm.nl/fi-a
