This year’s Warm Sweater Day (Warmetruiendag) at Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University (RSM) on Friday 10 February provides more than just the chance to raise awareness for the nationwide energy-saving initiative and reduce the school’s carbon footprint. It also means everyone can help to make sure refugees and people in need have the warm sweaters they need this winter.

You can bring your old sweaters to campus between 6-10 February and put them in the container provided by the thrift shop Het Goed in Schiedam and organised by the Erasmus Sustainability Hub (ESH). The container will be located in Theil Hall on 6, 7 and 10 February and the ESH (Hatta building) on 8 and 9 February.

Warm Sweater Day is a one-day campaign supported by corporations, schools and other organisation across the Netherlands to coincide with the anniversary of the enactment of the Kyoto Protocol, an international agreement aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

On 10 February, Erasmus University Rotterdam will observe the motto ‘the greenest energy is the energy you don’t use’ by reducing the thermostat by one degree, saving an average of six per cent of its usual energy consumption – and reducing CO2 emissions by six per cent.

RSM aims to reduce its environmental footprint, helped by its school-wide initiative Sustainable RSM.  "February is historically a cold month in the Netherlands. We generally choose to turn up the heat dial in our buildings before choosing to put on warmer clothing indoors. On national Warme Truiendag, we can witness the positive outcome of collective action,” says Joey Johannsen, sustainability co-ordinator at RSM. “The entire EUR community is asked to put on a warmer sweater indoors, while the central heating is turned down by one degree Celsius. Doing this uses six per cent less energy than on an average winter day. Furthermore, the university reduces its CO2 emissions by six per cent,” she says. “We could choose to continue this in our work, study, and home for greater emissions reductions through the remaining winter."

RSM Store

To support this initiative, the RSM store will offer a discount on sweaters, available in their store as well as in the online shop, located on the third floor of the Mandeville Building. The promotion runs from Monday 6 February to Friday 10 February.
