An invitation to an all-expenses-paid three-day international symposium on economic growth in Switzerland was the prize for master student Anuj Narayanan Kannankutty from Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University (RSM), for his essay on alternatives to economic growth. It was one of the 100 essays chosen from 900 submitted to the St. Gallen Wings of Excellence Award, a global competition for students at graduate and postgraduate level.

Anuj, from the MSc Business Administration Master in Management programme at RSM, attended the Leaders of Tomorrow symposium at the University of St. Gallen (HSG). The event is billed as ‘the world’s premier opportunity for intergenerational debates’ and he heard speakers from business, academia, NGOs and politics on the subject of ‘Economic growth: the good, the bad and the ugly’, with discussions and workshops on topics ranging from emerging markets and migration to automation, and the UK’s forthcoming referendum on its membership of the European Union.

“An intense, exciting and memorable week at the Symposium,” he commented on his return. “It inspired me to always challenge the status quo and think in scale. The world today is thriving with economic, social and intellectual capital. It needs the leaders of tomorrow to channel these resources to address the big world challenges of the present and the future.”

The greatest impression from St Gallen, he said, was the undercurrent of ‘conscious capitalism’ that ran through the event, emphasising sustainability, equality, climate change and human rights. “This gives hope for the world that the leaders of tomorrow are especially conscious of the impact of economic growth on humanity and the planet,” he commented.

Anuj has been active for Sustainable RSM during his studies at RSM, most recently taking part as a member of the planning committee working towards the 2016 RSM Sustainability Forum.  He is also Commissioner of External Relations for the board of the MSc Master in Management. He was born and raised in Bangalore, India and completed a bachelor degree in industrial engineering and management from M.S.Ramaiah Institute of Technology, Visvesvaraya Technological University, Bangalore, where he also co-founded and worked on an education information venture, AskLearnShareGrow (www.alsg.nl).
