Students who partnered up during their Executive MBA programme at Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University (RSM) have won an innovation competition in The Hague. Mark Durno and Bart Luters won the student category of The Hague Innovators Challenge 2016, which looked for the best innovative solutions that contribute to international social issues. The two students created a concept app, ‘Edibles’ that will stop food waste by creating a web-based market for food that is about to pass its sell-by date, or looks less than perfect.

The Edible app is ‘an auction platform for unloved food’, and allows sellers such as supermarkets, hotels, restaurants or individuals to send targeted sale notifications to Edibles’ network of users. Mark and Bart have produced an animated film and a website to show how the app works.

As students on the Executive MBA programme at RSM, they both work in other positions alongside their MBA studies. Mark is an urban farmer in The Hague, promoting a short supply chain, and Bart runs a video support app, a tool to help reduce CO2 emissions from logistics.

The Hague Innovators Challenge was hosted as a precursor to The Hague’s forthcoming Impact Start-up City festival in May 2016, which occurs during the city’s six-month presidency of the European Union. The Challenge resulted in a shortlist of 9 projects being selected from 32 submissions, and put up for public voting on www.impactcity.nl. The nine finalists pitched their ideas to an independent jury headed by senior communications advisor Asceline Groot of ASN Bank during the Big Improvement Day at the AFAS Circustheater in Scheveningen.

Four winners were announced: first prize of €35,000 went to Noordzeeboerderij Scheveningen and its plan for sustainable offshore seaweed cultivation. Second prize of € 20,000 went to Zonnebrand Zonder Rommel and their development of a highly protective sunscreen for babies and toddlers which uses a natural filter instead of chemicals. Third prize of €10,000 went to Urban Mining with Credits, who will recycle plastic and electronic appliances.

Edibles won the student award and € 5,000, which they will use to develop their online marketplace for unloved food. The Edibles team were presented with their award by Councillor Karsten Klein, who is responsible for urban economics in The Hague.
