Alumni from Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University (RSM) gathered in Milan for a weekend in October to reunite, attend Universal Exposition Milano 2015 and network. Three Local Chapters – Milan, Zurich and London – had joined forces to plan this first pan-European event for alumni from various RSM programmes

Around 20 RSM alumni and a few from other business schools travelled from all parts of Europe for this RSM alumni weekend. The meet-up included an excursion to the Expo Milano 2015, a global showcase for more than 140 countries, with a guided tour of the Dutch Pavilion.

Memories of Rotterdam at the Expo

The alumni represented almost all RSM programmes, including MBA programmes, the Master in International Management/CEMS programme, the BSc in International Business Administration (BScIBA) programme and MSc programmes. They graduated between 1996 and 2015.

The theme of the Expo evolved around food, and with the topic of ’Feeding the planet, energy for life’’, the alumni were able to taste Dutch food such as poffertjes (small pancakes), herring and cheese to remind them of their time in the Netherlands when studying at RSM.  The other activities during the weekend were also focused on food, as alumni were able to try dishes from the Italian cuisine in downtown Milan.

Alumni weekends

“It’s always nice to get together and get to know fellow alumni from other countries,” said Claudia Schneider, who completed RSM’s BScIBA in 2009 and RSM’s MSc in Strategic Management in 2010, and now works as an engagement manager at Heidrick & Struggles. “The weekend was an excellent excuse to get to know Milan. I enjoyed the Saturday dinner very much as we were able to have some good conversations over excellent Italian food at one of Milan's most hip restaurants.”

The alumni weekend in Milan was the first one organised from alumni for alumni for the audience from the whole Europe, including partners and friends from other business schools. The event was an opportunity for networking, socialising and visiting an interesting city. Alumnus Philip Lloyd (MBA, 2011) from RSM Local Chapter Italy hosted the group.

Leadership weekend

The previous initiative to combine the alumni activity across a bigger area was the successful alumni leadership weekend in Germany in April 2015. There are many ways for alumni to attend networking events, stay connected to RSM, benefit from lifelong learning opportunities and be a part of RSM’s global alumni network of more than 29,000 members through Local Chapters and Clubs worldwide.

The next leadership weekend in Munich will take place from 3 – 6 June 2016. For more information about this event and about Local Chapters, please email alumni@rsm.nl
