Alumnus Pieter van der Hoeven from Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University (RSM) has won the Legal Tech Startup Award 2015. His company, Clocktimizer, was presented with the first edition of this prize in early October at PLEIT2015, a conference focusing on IT for legal service organisations.

Pieter van der Hoeven completed RSM’s International Full-time MBA in 2014. His startup Clocktimizer enables in-depth analysis of a law firm's internal operations with big data business intelligence software.

Innovation for legal services

For this first Legal Tech Startup Award, Clocktimizer was chosen out of 21 international startups. The award is organised by Dutch Legal Tech, a meetup group for professionals who are interested in technology and innovation of legal services. The Legal Tech Startup Award offers new innovative enterprises the opportunity to present themselves to law firms.

For the Legal Tech Startup Award, Van der Hoeven was asked to pitch in front of an audience of almost 600 lawyers and other professionals in the legal industry. “The benefits of having learned to receive and incorporate feedback and to make last-minute changes to the pitch definitely contributed to our success,” said Van der Hoeven.

New source of data

CEO Van der Hoeven said that the lawyers who voted for Clocktimizer recognised the innovative character of Clocktimizer's product. “We unlock a new source of data in an innovative way. Our pitch explained the benefits of our solution,” said Van der Hoeven, adding that he learned how to pitch successfully during the RSM MBA.

Legal data analytics

In addition to exposure to legal services companies, winning the Award gives Clocktimizer access to legal advice from law firm Kennedy Van der Laan, financial advice from ING Bank, technical and security advice from Lexxyn Group, and marketing exposure in legal media from publishing company Sdu.

Van der Hoeven says his long-time goal for Clocktimizer is to become the standard platform for legal billing data analytics, both for lawyers and their clients. “With the Legal Tech Startup Award, we hope to bring more lawyers onto the platform, extending our reach in the legal services industry.”
