Until recently, bachelor graduates would automatically qualify for at least one master programme in the faculty at which they had studied. But a recent change in Dutch legislation has allowed Dutch universities to introduce selection criteria for internal students. Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University (RSM) is one of few schools or faculties in the Netherlands that is making all of its master programmes more selective in order to boost the quality of education. In doing this, internal and external students hoping to study for a master degree are given a level playing field.

From the academic year 2017/2018, internal students with a bachelor degree from RSM or from Erasmus University Rotterdam will need a weighted Grade Point Average (GPA) of 7.0 or higher to be eligible for any one of RSM’s master programmes. Alternatively, RSM will accept a Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) score of 600 or more. These criteria already apply to bachelor graduates from other universities.

RSM’s Dean Steef van de Velde: “By making this decision now, we can ensure that all students joining our master programmes are talented, motivated and driven. In turn, this will increase the quality of their education. I’m convinced that using selective entry for all of our master programmes will reinforce the reputation of our school and thus enhance the value of our graduates’ degrees. This decision is clearly enhancing quality and excellence, in line with RSM’s current strategy.”

The introduction of selection criteria for master programmes starting in September 2017 means that external applicants for RSM master programmes, for example bachelor students from outside of RSM, will no longer be at a disadvantage to RSM bachelor graduates when trying to gain access to RSM’s range of specialised MSc programmes.

In addition, RSM is continuing to invest in the quality of education in all of its BSc and MSc programmes to ensure they are of the highest standard and to educate its students to become the business leaders of tomorrow.
