After 19 years of pioneering leadership, Dr René Olie, associate professor of International and Strategic Management at Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University (RSM), steps down as academic director of the IM/CEMS programme, passing the torch to Dr Giuseppe Criaco, associate professor in RSM’s department of Strategic Management and Entrepreneurship.

The IM/CEMS programme, a flagship initiative at RSM, has entered a new chapter as Dr René Olie, associate professor at RSM and the programme’s founding academic director (AD), prepares to step down after nearly two decades. Launched in 2006, Dr Olie was charged with creating a programme that would merge the existing CEMS programme, which was first an optional MSc programme and open to any MSc student, with the then-unsuccessful MSc International Business programme.

The programme has grown from a small European network with around 17 participating schools to a global collaboration that now includes 33 leading institutions across six continents.

Celebrating 19 years of growth and global impact

Reflecting on this transformation, Dr Olie shared, “The number of students applying is now around five times higher than the number of spots available. IM/CEMS has a solid reputation inside the school as a flagship programme with excellent students.”

Over the years and as AD, Dr Olie has introduced initiatives such as alumni mentoring, which he describes as a testament to the programme’s enduring connections. “We received a high number of positive responses from our alumni, willing to take up mentor roles and to be involved in the programme.” Dr Olie continues, “CEMS as a network is a great international family. I am thankful to Michel Lander for his support in recent years, and I would like to express my thanks to the amazing programme managers I have worked with: Patricia de Heer, Marlies Koolhaas, Gina Kim and, now, Marta Crabbia. They represent the heart and soul of the programme!”

A new director with fresh vision

Taking over the reins as IM/CEMS academic director is Dr Criaco, who brings extensive experience and enthusiasm to the role. “During my time leading the IM/CEMS Block Seminar on New Venturing Consulting in collaboration with the European Space Agency (ESA) from 2017 to 2022, I had the privilege of working with highly motivated students who consistently demonstrated the ability to tackle complex challenges. This left a lasting impression on me,” Dr Criaco said.

He emphasised the importance of the programme’s global collaboration: “In a time when internationalisation is scrutinised, successful initiatives like IM/CEMS highlight the power of a global mindset in addressing business and societal challenges, and the value of being part of a global network.”

Future ambitions for the programme

Dr Criaco has outlined his vision: “I aim to expand the RSM IM/CEMS programme’s global impact by enhancing its experiential and competency-based learning opportunities. This will ensure students are equipped with the knowledge, skills and attitudes needed to thrive in an evolving global landscape.

“This approach aligns with RSM’s core educational strategy and prepares students for their future careers. In collaboration with strategic partners and our strong alumni network, I plan to develop a curriculum that addresses competencies for both current and emerging roles.”

As Dr Olie steps down, the IM/CEMS programme’s strong legacy and exciting future under Dr Criaco signals a new era of excellence and innovation.

RSM wishes Dr Criaco all the best in his new role as academic director of IM/CEMS, and gives sincere thanks to Dr Olie for his years of hard work and dedication!
