Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University (RSM) Case Development Centre (CDC) celebrates the 2025 #WorldCaseTeachingDay on 5 February to acknowledge the invaluable worldwide contribution of case teaching. By seeking innovative approaches and delivering high-quality cases, RSM’s CDC proudly ranks in the Top 10 of the Case Centre Impact Index 2024. Case teaching facilitates the sharing and integration of knowledge in a practical and engaging way for both students and educators. Since 2008, the RSM CDC has been consistently striving to push the boundaries of case teaching, thereby helping educators and students around the world to excel in their given fields.

Innovating case teaching for greater impact

Aligned with its mission to explore new ways of enhancing case teaching, the RSM CDC recognises the value of harnessing emerging trends, such as using AI to complement case teaching methods. The objective? To make case teaching more effective and impactful for both teachers and students.

The CDC’s multimedia case collection exemplifies this approach, offering an immersive learning experience that goes beyond traditional methods. By integrating videos, photos, interviews and additional teaching materials, the CDC creates this extensive learning experience.

Enriching case learning through podcases

To celebrate this year’s #WorldCaseTeachingDay, the CDC proudly introduces its newest innovation: case podcasts. These podcasts aim to plunge students deeper into the themes of the cases, helping the learning experience to feel more real and personal.

Moreover, because the CDC recognises the added value of AI in case-based learning and teaching, as well as the new opportunities it opens up, RSM’s CDC enlists AI to help generate their podcasts. Whether listening to the narration or directly to the people who have been involved in the case, students can better connect with the content and the challenges presented.

Currently available are two AI-generated podcasts about existing RSM cases: Port of Rotterdam: Introduction of a Digital Platform and The Coffee of Andradas: A Community Branding Project.

How podcasts benefit case teaching:

  1. Drive accessibility and convenience: Listening is less stressful and more convenient than traditional reading, which also accommodates on-the-go learners.
  2. Cater to diverse learning styles: Every student learns differently. By incorporating auditory materials, the CDC supports a broader range of learning preferences.
  3. Foster empathy and connection: Audiobooks and podcasts help listeners to comprehend emotions through tone and voice, which engages emotional circuits and enhances understanding.
  4. Provide immersive learning: With podcasts, cases come alive to create a clear narrative that resonates with students and enriches their educational journey.

About the RSM Case Development Centre

Case studies are commonly utilised for educational purposes. A teaching case serves as a snapshot of a real-life situation, presenting a challenge that an organisation faced. It prompts students to adopt the perspectives of decision-makers and formulate effective solutions. A proficient case writer possesses the ability to articulate complex subjects in a manner accessible to non-experts, captivating readers with a compelling narrative.

RSM CDC (www.rsm.nl/cdc) operates as part of RSM's Impact and Engagement Unit, distinguished in Europe as one of the few organisations that specialise in case development. The CDC’s cases – made available through esteemed publishers such as Ivey Publishing, Harvard Business Publishing, SAGE Publishing, and the RSM Case Centre – are widely utilised by universities and other organisations worldwide. Several of the cases have won international prizes and have been featured as articles in prominent publications like the Financial Times and Harvard Business Review.

Through collaborations with various European institutions, the CDC actively engages in case development initiatives. Additionally, they deliver case writing workshops to scholars and aspiring case writers around the world. They constantly seek innovative approaches to enhance case-based learning and eagerly explore new mediums, including multimedia, to best present their cases.
