The first ever REmagine Thesis Award, supported by the Goldschmeding Foundation, was bestowed on five finalists for their exceptional student master theses. At the start of last year, Erasmus University Rotterdam (EUR) and Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University (RSM) joined forces with 14 other Dutch universities in the Council of Deans in Economics and Business to inaugurate this award, which recognises outstanding master theses in economics and business studies that address critical societal transitions. Each of the winners was awarded with a special statuette and a cash prize. The winning theses laid out fresh perspectives in five key areas on how to create a more sustainable and equitable future and how to bridge a rigorous analysis with real-world impact.
This past November 2024, five master graduates in economics and business – one each from Utrecht University, Eindhoven University of Technology, University of Groningen, and two students from University of Amsterdam – took home a REmagine Thesis Award and a cash prize of € 5,000 for combining academic excellence with innovative ideas in their theses. Each winning thesis addressed welfare, future of health and healthcare, institutional adaptability, responsible digital transformation, and sustainable economy.
Wilfred Mijnhardt, policy director general at RSM and the initiator of the award, explains what it stands for: “The initiative focuses on five key transition themes for the economy: sustainable economy, broad prosperity, digital transformation, healthy society, and institutional adaptability. These are the five themes of the joint impact agenda of the Council of Deans in Economics and Business (DEB), published in 2023. The REmagine Thesis Award shines a light on those individuals who are poised to transform how businesses, governments and organisations approach global challenges. It’s a way to recognise young researchers and to celebrate those who see themselves as architects of change.”
