When faced with unused audiovisual hardware, Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University (RSM) donated the equipment to the foundation IT4Kids that refurbishes unused IT hardware and resells it, using the proceeds to support children's sports initiatives. The organisation was founded by RSM alumnus Jordy Kool (Executive MBA 2004).

Albert de Bree, director of IT and facilities at RSM BV said: "By donating our old AV equipment, we can indirectly support children who do not have the opportunity to play sports due to financial or physical challenges." RSM’s donation of audiovisual hardware totalled approximately € 21,000 (excluding VAT), marking a substantial contribution to IT4Kids' cause.

A great suggestion

The donation came about after Albert de Bree and his IT team trialled and confirmed a new hybrid audio visual system in the classrooms of RSM’s Bayle building and found themselves with redundant IT hardware. Rather than let it collect dust in storage, de Bree seized the opportunity to give something back to society. When he spread the word at RSM about the hardware, Sue Martin, director of corporate and alumni relations at RSM suggested donating to the IT4Kids foundation – a move which aligned perfectly with RSM's mission to be a force for positive change in the world.

“This is a great example of how every employee, in every position, in every role can contribute to the mission of the school. Whether directly in the position of teaching our students about sustainability, affiliated with our food & beverage manager who initiates the non-use of package materials, or whether something comes to us from our network of colleagues, alumni and corporates – like in this instance,” explains Maarten van Ark, director of general operations at RSM BV.

IT4Kids: empowerment through sports

With over 423,000 children in the Netherlands facing financial or physical barriers to participating in sports, the mission of IT4Kids is more important than ever. The foundation gathers IT hardware that is no longer used, revamps it and resells it. All profits from the resale go to charities that support sports for children and thereby help the sponsored children to develop skills for life.

About IT4Kids

IT4Kids pioneers circular IT fundraising, redirecting profits from refurbished hardware to sports projects for underprivileged children. Their ethos is that every child deserves access to sports, fostering essential life skills like discipline and teamwork.

Vincent van Voorden, project and partnership manager of IT4Kids said: “IT4Kids is pleased with the generous donation of IT hardware from RSM BV! With that donation, we can ensure that even more children in the Netherlands can participate in sports and help to enrich their lives.” Visit the IT4Kids donation page to donate or learn more about their work.
