Lots of offices and home studies could probably do with a little love and new life right now. The Positive Change team at Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University (RSM) aimed to fix that last week by hosting a ‘Plant Party’ to collect and distribute fresh houseplants and repot plants in need of some extra love. It resulted in a restocked Plant Library at RSM, which was originally launched four years ago.

The Plant Library has a small variety of indoor plants and cuttings (or stekjes) which staff can take home or to their offices, and was organised by the team behind RSM’s 'Force for positive change' mission. During the Plant Party, the team took in approximately 30 new plants which were rehomed in RSM offices. However, the Plant Library is constantly restocked with plants (there are currently orchids donated by Carmen Meesters-Mirasol in the department of Technology and Operations Management) and plant cuttings so call in to the Plant Library on T3 of Mandeville to add some greenery to your home or office scenery.

The plant library is on Mandeville’s third floor by the social corner, accessible via the escalator by the main entrance. Visitors are invited to take a plant without charge, but they are also invited to donate plants and cuttings for others to enjoy – and to increase the variety of plants on the shelves.

Enhancing productivity

Eva Rood, director of RSM’s Positive Change Initiative, explains: “Random acts of kindness have a lasting trickle-down effect. This is one of the ways that we aim to create such a trickle-down effect, by sharing cuttings of our own plants and encouraging others to do so too. What’s more, it’s proven that plants in the office enhance happiness and productivity – and who would argue with that?”

RSM’s mission – to be a force for positive change in the world – came out of the RSM community’s sense of purpose and the factors driving its motivations. It includes the role a business school plays in ensuring it maintains a strong societal relevance and meaningful impact.
