Countries protect themselves against foreign competition. The new trade barriers in the world can be seen as a form of economic misconduct, leading to less growth, fewer jobs and lower wages. Research led by Professor Henk Volberda annually measures the competitiveness of countries, concluded that the openness of countries for international trade has fallen by 5.7 percent since the beginning of the crisis in 2008.
