The Nigerian daughter of oil and gas multinational Shell is liable for the damage caused by some major oil spills occurring between 2004 and 2007 that have taken place in two villages in Nigeria.

The Court of Appeal in The Hague has decided that on appeal on January 28.

The appeal means that Shell has to pay a subsidiary compensation to the farmers in Nigeria. The height thereof will be later determined in a separate claims procedure."This is quite a blow for Shell, "says Cees van Dam, professor business and human rights of the RSM.
