Philips Lighting has decided to reduce its research department in Eindhoven by one third; more than 100 predominantly highly educated employees are turning to the UWV. According to Henk Volberda of RSM, large companies are investing less and less in fundamental research: "they prefer to leave that to universities and knowledge institutes. They keep it close to the business divisions in applied research, which limits the payback time."
