One of the biggest barriers to data-driven decision-making in an organisation is the HiPPO Effect, when the highest paid person’s opinion gets acted upon even if it’s not backed by data or if others don’t believe it’s the best course. A study by Balazs Szatmari, former PhD candidate at RSM, found that projects led by senior leaders failed more often while projects led by junior managers were more likely to be successful.
