What are the requirements for reference letters?

You are required to submit two reference letters. Note that only academic reference letters will be accepted. Once you submit your application, your referees will receive an automatic email from us requesting their reference letters. Please inform your referees that you have provided their contact details and that we may reach out to them. While we ask for two references, you may include a third reference if you wish.

Is a GMAT or GRE test required for all applicants?

Yes. For ERIM/RSM projects, it is ideal to have GMAT or GRE scores that place you in or above the 85th percentile of test takers.

While it is possible to apply without GMAT or GRE scores, we will seek additional evidence of excellence, such as very good grades (top 15%) in your previous degrees (GPA), degrees from renowned universities, an strong master’s thesis, research experience, publications, or other outputs that demonstrate scientific engagement.

Are there minimum requirements for GMAT/GRE and TOEFL/IELTS tests?

For ERIM/RSM projects, it is ideal to have GMAT or GRE scores that place you in or above the 85th percentile of test takers, along with a strong command of English. For the internet-based TOEFL, a minimum total score of 100 is required, with all section scores (writing, speaking, reading, and listening) being at least 23. For IELTS, an overall band score of 7.5 is required, with all section scores (writing, speaking, reading, and listening) being at least 6.5.

Do you accept results from an online GMAT/GRE/TOEFL/IELTS test?

Yes, we accept results from the online versions of the required tests, with the exception of the online IELTS. Please ensure that the official score report is sent to ERIM.

My GMAT/GRE/TOEFL/IELTS test results were lower than I expected (due to illness, lack of preparation time, etc.). Can I re-take a test?

Yes, you may re-take the tests. If you achieve a higher score, the admissions committee will consider your best results.

My official GMAT/GRE report will only be available shortly after the application deadline. Is that a problem?

Official results typically take around three weeks to process. However, unofficial test results are available immediately after the test. You can submit your unofficial scores in your online application before the official results arrive.

Do I need to submit a TOEFL/IELTS test if I have taken a GMAT/GRE test?

Yes, applicants are required to provide a TOEFL or IELTS language test result regardless of whether they have taken the GMAT or GRE.

Can I apply for a waiver from the GMAT/GRE and TOEFL/IELTS?

It is possible to apply without GMAT/GRE scores; however, we will seek additional evidence of excellence, such as very good grades (top 15%) in your previous degrees (GPA), degrees from renowned universities, a strong master’s thesis, research experience, publications, or other outputs that demonstrate scientific engagement.

You may also apply for a waiver from TOEFL/IELTS if the medium of instruction for your entire university education (bachelor's and master's programmes) was English. In this case, please include an additional letter along with your application and ensure that you attach any relevant documents. The final decision on the waiver request will be made by ERIM.

The bachelor/master programme(s) I have completed were taught in English. Do I still need to submit a TOEFL/IELTS test?

In general, ERIM requires applicants whose native language is not English to submit TOEFL or IELTS test scores. However, if the language of instruction for your entire university education (bachelor's and master's programmes) was English, you may submit a request for a TOEFL/IELTS waiver. The final decision on the waiver request will be made by ERIM.

I have a PhD degree. Can I apply for the PhD programme?

If you have already obtained a PhD or are in the process of earning one elsewhere, you cannot be admitted to a PhD programme or promotion at Erasmus University Rotterdam. However, if you wish to pursue a second PhD in a significantly different scientific discipline, you must request an exception from the Doctorate Board.
