Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University (RSM) hosted the Future of Management Education (FOME) conference at the end of December 2024, marking its first time as a full member of the Alliance. Over three dynamic days, deans, educators and innovators from leading business schools worldwide came together to explore the transformative potential of artificial intelligence (AI), virtual reality (VR) and innovative digital learning solutions in management and business education.

“In my opinion, the most important thing about FOME is our values: to share, care and dare. Sharing is something we do really well in our collaboration with one another. This is because we care, and that caring comes from the trust we have in one another. We have an open collaboration where we can safely and openly share. The ‘dare’ is also quite important; we want to innovate and do great things together, to push the envelope on the future of management education.” – Prof. Steve Muylle, Vlerick Business School and FOME Alliance chair

Collaboration and immersive learning

With an energetic start, the conference commenced with a warm welcome from RSM Dean Aukje Hassoldt, Dean of Education Michel Lander, and FOME Alliance chair Prof. Steve Muylle of Vlerick Business School. The day featured strategic deans' meetings, discussions on the evolving landscape of management education, and an engaging VR session that provided hands-on experience with immersive learning technologies. The evening concluded with a networking boat cruise along Rotterdam’s Maas river.

AI, digital assessments, GenAI in education

Day two focused on the integration of AI and digital tools in education. RSM faculty members Dr Dimitrios Vlachopoulos, Dr Dimitrios Tsekouras and Dr Arjen Mulder presented their latest work in breakout sessions. Dr Vlachopoulos discussed AI for human skills development and how it enhances student support, while Dr Tsekouras shared insights about integrating GenAI in business education. Dr Mulder discussed automated and personalised assessments, highlighting the potential of Mastery Path learning. The evening featured a dinner at the Rotterdam Euromast, 100 metres above the city.

Recognising excellence and future directions

On the final day, the power of collaboration and innovation was highlighted. The FOME 2024 Learning Design Awards included five finalists who showcased their unique contributions to digital education. In the end, RSM’s Dr Colin Lee won first place for his digital assessment methodology, HAPP, which offers automated and personalised mastery-based learning. The conference also introduced the FOME Content Marketplace, a platform designed to facilitate the sharing of digital courses and learning materials among FOME member institutions. Closing discussions focused on future initiatives, including quarterly town halls and project incubation efforts to drive continued collaboration.

RSM’s hosting of the FOME Conference 2024 reinforced its commitment to advancing management education, thereby fostering technological innovation and strengthening global partnerships to shape the future of business learning.
