The innovative knowledge platform CollectieveKracht, set up by Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University (RSM), has been awarded the prestigious KHMW Brouwer Vertrouwensprijs (Brouwer Trust Prize). The accolade, which comes with €100,000 in funding, was presented during a ceremony held on 20 January 2025 in Haarlem, the Netherlands. This recognition underlines the platform’s vital role in fostering mutual trust and societal cohesion through citizen collectives.

Strengthening mutual trust

The KHMW Brouwer Vertrouwensprijs is awarded by De Koninklijke Hollandsche Maatschappij der Wetenschappen (KHMW) to support projects that have demonstrated success in strengthening social trust within the Netherlands. CollectieveKracht’s groundbreaking work in engaged research and its focus on reciprocity as a core principle were key factors in its selection. Unlike conventional funding models tied to specific projects, this prize emphasizes the importance of continuity in fostering long-term impact.

“This prize validates the value of supporting science to strengthen trust within society,” said Professor Tine De Moor, founder of CollectieveKracht and professor at RSM. “It shows that our efforts to bridge the gap between science and society are resonating. Initiatives like this remind us that trust is an essential foundation for collective action and societal progress.”

A unique model for engaged research

CollectieveKracht has pioneered a novel approach to socially engaged research, facilitating dialogues between diverse stakeholders in the realm of citizen collectives. By emphasising reciprocity, the platform strengthens relationships within collectives and between these groups and broader social institutions.

“As scientists, we need to share our knowledge before asking citizens to participate in research,” explained De Moor. “Our role is to bring evidence-based insights into these discussions and ensure that our findings are accessible and useful to society. This approach is crucial for maintaining trust in science and amplifying its societal impact.”

The platform’s work aligns closely with RSM’s mission of creating positive social impact and supports EUR’s broader ambition to serve as a catalyst for change.

Driving long-term impact

The €100,000 prize will support the sustainability and expansion of CollectieveKracht, enabling it to scale its innovative research and outreach. The funding ensures the platform can continue empowering citizen collectives and fostering resilience in alternative organisational forms.

“CollectieveKracht shows that many people are ready to tackle societal challenges together,” said De Moor. “By facilitating knowledge sharing and strengthening the foundations of citizen collectives, we’re accelerating the transition to a more sustainable and just society.”

Citizen collectives: a distinct organisational form

Citizen collectives represent a unique institutional logic, distinct from traditional government organizations or market parties. Through extensive historical and longitudinal research, Professor De Moor’s team has demonstrated that such alternative organisational forms have played vital roles in addressing societal challenges in the past and can continue to do so in the future.

Since its inception, CollectieveKracht has relied on external, non-academic funding, making the Brouwer Vertrouwensprijs an essential contribution to its mission. The jury praised the platform for its professional organisation, robust scientific foundation, and ability to anchor trust in the collective strength of society.
