Nationality: Dutch
Age: 32
Job title: chief operating officer at Heleon Group
Previous degree: BSc in health policy and management from Erasmus University, and MSc in global health at Maastricht University
“I’ve been working at Heleon Group for nine years—a company my father founded 25 years ago. Initially, I joined part-time while finishing my master thesis, intending to pursue a career in my field. But over time, I grew to love the business, the team, and the ability to drive change.
I realised I needed external experience and new tools to grow personally and professionally. I had some business knowledge, but it wasn’t enough. I wanted to connect with professionals from different industries to gain fresh perspectives.
I had already taken courses at RSM, like Women in Leadership and Negotiating for Success, and loved them. Conversations with an MBA student sparked my interest even more. Given my positive experience with Erasmus University during my bachelor degree, it felt natural to return – it was like coming home.”
“It constantly pushes me outside of my comfort zone. I’ve only just started, but being surrounded by high-performing professionals from diverse backgrounds is already a learning experience. Coming from a family business, my biggest role model has always been my father. Now, I can challenge myself, engage with new perspectives, and prove myself in a fresh environment. Working in teams with people I didn’t know before has helped me develop leadership skills in real time, applying what I’ve learned immediately.”
“The culture is open, collaborative, and incredibly welcoming. I expected a more formal atmosphere, but from day one, there was a strong sense of togetherness. Everyone in the programme is driven – not just by career advancement but by a genuine desire to learn and improve. We’re all balancing work and study, so there’s a deep mutual respect and understanding. It’s a completely different experience from a bachelor or master degree.”
“Finance has been the biggest challenge for me. I don’t have a financial background, and working in a private company means I haven’t had much exposure to financial statements of public firms. The terminology was unfamiliar at first, but I’ve enjoyed the learning process more than expected.”
“One of my goals was to integrate my studies with my job, rather than seeing them as separate. This has been easier than I thought. For example, we explored coaching leadership, which resonated with me. I used to feel the need to control everything, but I’m learning to step back and empower others instead. I even shared a book on coaching leadership with one of our operations managers, as I believe these skills can benefit the entire company.”
“We’ve only had a few PLD sessions so far, but I’m really excited about this aspect of the MBA. For me, leadership development is the main reason for doing this programme. Improving my finance or strategy skills is great, but my biggest goal is personal growth – to become a better leader and enhance my organisation by developing myself.”
“The network. While not part of the formal curriculum, learning from my peers has been incredibly valuable. Everyone comes from different industries, bringing unique insights and experiences. Surprisingly, I’ve also enjoyed finance more than expected. I thought it would be overwhelming, but I’m finding it fascinating to decode financial statements and understand the language of business better.”
“Our company operates in a male-dominated industry. I was the first woman in a management role, and I’m committed to mentoring other women within the organisation. Encouraging them to pursue leadership positions is crucial, but I also want to show that effective leadership doesn’t require adopting a masculine approach. Embracing diverse leadership styles strengthens businesses and industries alike.”
“RSM is a highly respected business school, particularly in the Netherlands. Earning my MBA here strengthens my credibility and demonstrates my commitment to personal and professional development. Beyond the qualification itself, the experience is equipping me with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to grow within my company and lead more effectively.”
“Yes, in many ways. Last year, I transitioned from operations management to working alongside my father as COO of the group. We’re now discussing succession planning, and the MBA is helping me assess my readiness to take over in the future. It’s still a journey of discovery, but the programme has strengthened my vision and given me confidence that I’m on the right path.”
“I’m excited to continue combining my MBA with my role and to bring fresh ideas into the company. There’s a lot of work ahead, but the MBA has energised me to drive innovation and support our leadership team in becoming more effective. I look forward to seeing how both my company and I continue to grow.”
