Demonstrating commitment to educational innovation, the Harmonized Appraisal (HAPP) assessment methodology and its software have earned international acclaim, highlighting the achievements of Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University (RSM). The groundbreaking tool – developed by RSM’s Dr Colin Lee– secured a Silver Award in the Learning Assessment category at the prestigious QS Awards during the QS Reimagine Education conference held in London in December 2024. HAPP also received the Learning Design Award at the Future of Management Education (FOME) conference in Rotterdam in the same week.

HAPP is a state-of-the-art assessment tool that aims to streamline the grading process and improve the feedback quality for students and teachers. It standardises and enhances the evaluation process for assignments like essays and presentations, without the use of AI.

“The conferences of QS and FOME showed the remarkable quality and scale of educational innovations presented by universities around the world. They reinforced my admiration for the significant impact Dutch universities achieve,” said Dr Colin Lee, a key figure behind HAPP’s development. “Support for tools like HAPP are critical to advancing education and driving innovation.”

The QS and FOME awards recognised HAPP’s educational benefits and its software, which was developed by RSM Digitalisation & Information Services (RDIS). Dr Lee’s work on the software was largely funded through a Community for Learning & Innovation (CLI) fellowship.

Grading and feedback processes

The achievements of HAPP underscore its transformative potential for education. This innovative methodology truly boosts the efficiency, reliability and quality of learning assessments as it integrates the grading and feedback processes into one, simplifying the assessment workflow for teachers and enhancing the learning experience for students.

Since its introduction, the HAPP assessment tool has facilitated over 5,000 evaluations for individual and group assignments, benefitting more than 12,000 students while saving an estimated 1,600 hours of teacher time. Initially used within a single department, HAPP has expanded across multiple faculties at Erasmus University Rotterdam and attracted interest from international universities, including institutions in Australia, Spain, Norway and the USA.

Designed for large-scale assignments, HAPP fosters good practices in grading and feedback. With plans to enhance its platform and explore generative AI for setup assistance, HAPP continues to transform educational assessment globally.

Earlier this year, Dr Colin Lee and his co-authors were also awarded the Best Paper in Management Education and Development Award by the Management Education and Development division of the Academy of Management (AoM) for their paper on HAPP.
