Positive change to business
RSM's emphasis on cases pertaining to sustainability and responsible development enables students to identify both the challenges and opportunities presented in managerial practices, allowing them to construct business strategies that are not only realistic but also meaningful.
“We’re educating the leaders of the future. They will be facing a lot of change which is often accompanied by contrast, conflict, and uncertainty,” says RSM’s Dean of Education Prof. Michel Lander. “The utilisation of the case method has the potential to motivate students to transcend the boundaries of their own area of specialisation and cultural biases, and to delve into the intricacies that the world currently faces, integrating environmental, social, and economic aspects.”
Lander believes that case studies present RSM students with a breadth of examples from business that they would not otherwise see. “This gives them the opportunity to see where their theoretical knowledge can be applied in real life. Our impact-led cases show them how their management skills can help them to make a positive change to business.”
The Impact Index
The Case Centre, headquartered at Cranfield University, UK and with an office at Babson College, USA, is the independent home of the case method, with more than 500 member organisations worldwide. For many years The Case Centre has celebrated excellent cases, authors and teachers through its recognition portfolio of the annual bestselling and classic cases, awards and competitions, and bestselling case authors initiatives.
The launch of the Impact Index in 2023 extends the portfolio by providing a platform to recognise the global reach and impact of an organisation’s case writing. The Case Centre uses data from the previous academic year to compile the Impact Index. To reflect the global reach and impact of an organisation's case writing, the index metrics include how many of their cases have been adopted, by how many organisations, in how many countries, and how many individual students have been taught with the cases. All organisations that have published at least one case with The Case Centre during the previous academic year are eligible.
RSM cases
The RSM CDC case collection comprises hundreds of cases and teaching notes on a wide range of topics and industries, including international bestsellers and award winners. CDC works closely with RSM faculty members to develop and write cases used in bachelor, master, MBA, and executive courses. Some of the cases also have multimedia supporting materials.
There’s an extensive list of RSM’s teaching cases available on The Case Centre’s website, some are free. The free case collections include QuinnE cases, ENABLE cases, SELIS cases and Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) cases.
CDC’s managing editor Tao Yue feels privileged that the RSM case collection was placed 10th in The Case Centre's Impact Index 2023. “Our dedication to case-based learning will continue to deepen, in addition to our commitment to enhancing students' problem-solving abilities and fostering the development of critical thinking skills,” she said.
Dr Bas Koene, director of the CDC, is pleased with the recognition of the case work that the school produces. “We are happy that apparently we can share this experience and that there is an international audience that considers our case material equally valuable. We like to see them as part of our community extending our ambition to be a force for positive change in the world.”
Case Development Centre
Business students and seasoned business experts can learn from the experiences of other real-life organisations and decision-makers. Engagement with practice is a core element of RSM’s approach to research and teaching. The Case Development Centre (CDC) at RSM supports case-based management education by turning exceptional business and management experiences into powerful learning tools. CDC works closely with RSM faculty to develop high-quality case studies and disseminate them among educators all over the world.
