Recent graduate Sven Tellemanns from the MSc Business Information Management programme at Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University (RSM) won the Erasmus Thesis Awards: Impactful Data Analytics at Erasmus University Rotterdam (EUR) on 26 January 2023. His thesis covers a stock market prediction model.

The jury was impressed with the depth, novelty and creativity of Tellemanns’ thesis. The graduate took a novel approach based on encoding stock market data covering 10 years into 1.41 million multichannel images, enabling the use of new model architectures in the financial domain. For this, Tellemanns won the grand prize of €1,000.

Data and AI research

The goal of the Erasmus Thesis Awards is to celebrate data and AI talent at the EUR, and to bring together data and AI researchers and practitioners. It also helps prepare young talent for a career that will involve data and AI, to see how to apply these in a well thought out, effective and ethical way. The jury looked at the depth of the analysis, the application of data science methods, the pitch, and the business potential and societal impact. Another key element of the competition was answering the audience questions from the diverse EUR data and AI related researchers and students.

The other four nominees were: Rowan Doesburg, graduate Data Science and Marketing Analytics at Erasmus School of Economics (ESE), Stan Hennekes, recent graduate of Econometrics at ESE, Mathijs Barendse, recent graduate MScBA Business Analytics and Management at RSM, who already won the selections in their own master programmes. Their research focused on current topics such as: customer recommendations using neural networks in retail and spotting anomalies in forensic data via machine learning. The effectiveness, applicability, but especially also the ethical aspects were thoroughly discussed.

The Erasmus Thesis Awards: Impactful Data Analytics are made possible by the Erasmus Centre for Data Analytics (ECDA), Maeur and the academic and student community around data and AI at the Erasmus University Rotterdam. Tellemanns’ thesis coaches where: Dr Philipp Cornelius and Tayfun Kucukyilmaz from RSM, Erasmus University Rotterdam.
